Established in 1980, Sumac Ridge Estate Winery lies just north of Summerland. The winery has been dedicated to producing 100 percent British Columbia-grown wines since inception, and all its wines carry the VQA designation. Sumac Ridge produced its first vintage in 1980, making it British Columbia's first estate winery. In the spring of 2000, Sumac Ridge joined Vincor International. At the Summerland winery site, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and Riesling grapes are grown on a vineyard sloping toward Okanagan Lake. Farther south is Black Sage Vineyard, a 115-acre vineyard in Oliver where such noble red varieties as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are grown in addition to a number of white varieties. The winery augments its own supply of grapes from other respected vineyards throughout the region. Pioneering in many ways, Sumac Ridge Estate Winery was the first Okanagan winery to produce premium sparkling wines. Sumac Ridge has consistently developed award-winning wines. In 1995, the winery introduced the region's first Meritage, which garnered a rating of 85 points in Wine Spectator magazine in 1999 and was the only Canadian red mentioned. |

Sumac Ridge Estate Winery reviews

An architectural oasis arising from the distinctive bedrock typical of the desert-dry South Okanagan, overlooking the shimmering blue depths of Okanagan Lake against a backdrop of fruit orchards, vineyards, and unspoiled semi-arid forest-land, Sumac Ridge winery boasts one of the most natural, beautiful settings in the country. That some of the world's most distinctive wines are produced in its cellars makes one wonder if all of the credit should go to the winemakers.
