Pentage Winery is a boutique winery nestled on 23 acres overlooking Skaha Lake in Penticton. Owned and operated by Paul Gardner and Julie Rennie, it all began in 1996. It started out as a short getaway to the Okanagan looking for property. Paul had a great desire for land and space and happened to stumble upon 4400 Lakeside Road. "It had everything right and wrong with it," Paul said. With his vision and immense passion, the dream started to unfold. In 1996, they bought the property and immediately, Paul got to work contouring 23 acres. In 1997 the 6.5-acre Vista Ridge vineyard was planted with seven different varieties of vinifera. 1999 marked the year of the first vintage. Pentage's commitment to excellence begins in the vineyards; they believe the foundation of the greatest of wines is a true reflection of the soil and climate - also known as the "terroir". The low-yield cultivation strategy produces the top-quality grapes essential to their premium quality, limited release, hand-crafted wines.

The several wines we have opened from Pentage have been excellent, with highlights being the "Pentage" - red blend - and the Sauvignon Blanc. The winery is not set up with such niceties as a tasting room / sales area, but the people are friendly and the wine is worth the effort. Phone before you go.

I was at Restaurant 62 in Abbotsford recently for dinner, and had the most wonderful red wine. Many of us were asking "What wine is this? It's great!" The wine was a 2005 Pentage Gamay. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find this great wine in our local wine stores. Next time I go to the Okanagan, I will definitely be stopping by the Pentage Winery!

Having had dinner at the Toasted Oak in Oliver we decided to try Pentage Gewürztraminer 2006. It was incredible - I don't know all the correct wine terminology but the wine was not acidic and had a wonderful aftertaste. One on the best Gewürztraminers I have tasted in a long time.
